How We Fell In Love With The Aussies
When my daughters were in high school, they competed in rodeo, so we were on the road a lot and saw this adorable miniature Australian Shepherd puppy we fell in love with. So I researched the miniature Australian Shepherds and loved what they had to offer, and that is when I set out to find the Perfect Mini Aussies Puppy by researching the health, hips, eyes, and temperaments of parents and then reputable breeders. I finally found the perfect puppies to join our family. It was love at first sight. The girls traveled to all the rodeos with me, helped me work cattle, and were always at my side or in my lap. That is when I started talking to my sister about breeding. She has been a breeder of Golden retrievers for 20 years. I told her I wanted to become a breeder of The Beautiful Miniature Australian Shepherds.
My Goal
To Improve the breed not to breed for quantity but quality, and here at Southern Charm, we have done our best to acquire the best ( Sires and Dams) to produce the best Quality PUPPIES of genetics, temperament, intelligence, agility, herding ability, and best of all they are super loyal companions. Our puppies are born in our home, where our moms are the most comfortable, and if mom needs a little help, I can assist. At 2 days old, they visit the vet to have dew claws removed, tail docked if not natural dock, and a check-up. For the next 10 days, we give our mother and puppies some privacy. And then, at 2 weeks, the socialization begins. We expose the puppies to different noises like TV, music, voices, etc.
And most importantly, socialize with them and do a lot of cuddling. I watch how each puppy develops their personality and some of the silly things they do as they get older. As the puppies get older, they learn to use the doggie door and begin their potty training stage and a lot of socializing, playing, and swimming.
HEALTH: Puppies at 6 weeks of age are started on NUVET PLUS SUPPLEMENTS and are introduced to puppy food. I feed holistic puppy food and dog food I believe is healthier for them. WORMERS: Would only be used on an as-needed basis. I use Trifexis or Multi Advantage heartworm preventive combo products on my adult dogs to minimize worming puppies. At 7-1/2 weeks of age, they will go for another vet visit for their 1st set of puppy shots and a complete health exam. And at that time, they will get their health certificate. Before Puppy goes to their new loving family, they will have been started on a heart guard preventative and will be microchipped. At 8 weeks of age, they will be ready to go to their new forever home to be a great companion, excel in the show ring, or be used for herding or agility. Their intelligent mines, athletic ability, and conformation will allow you to compete or to have a truly loyal companion for life. About Miniature Australian Shepherds
What Is A Miniature Aussie/Mini American Shepherd?
A Miniature Australian Shepherd (now recognized by AKC as Miniature American Shepherd) was developed by breeding smaller Australian Shepherds for the desired size. Mini Aussies exhibit the same characteristics as their larger variation: athleticism, intelligence, herding instinct, loyalty. They are compact dogs with all the best to offer.
Origin
In 1968 a breeding program to develop the Miniature Australian Shepherd was begun by Doris Cordova. Breeders used smaller dogs to produce a miniature size that is a mirror image of the Australian Shepherd in standard, character, and intellect. In the coming years, more breeders have joined their efforts, and 1980s, the North American Miniature Australian Shepherd Club of the USA and the Miniature Australian Shepherd Association were formed to promote and register the smaller dogs.
Size
Toy Height: 10 – 14 inches (26 – 36 cm). 7 – 20 pounds (3 – 9 kg)
Miniature Height: 13 – 18 inches (33 – 46 cm). 15 – 35 pounds (6 – 16 kg)
Temperament
Mini Aussies are very lively, agile, attentive, and easygoing puppies that love to play. They are easily trainable and are a devoted friend and guardian. They are very energetic and need a job to do. They get easily bored as a very intelligent breed, so an adequate outlet for physical and mental energy is crucial. They may become destructive if adequate stimuli is not provided. At times, their herding background is quite strong and gives them the tendency to try to herd people, especially small children, nipping at their heels. This behavior needs to be addressed when they are young, teach them that herding humans is not allowed. Once their needs are met, Mini Aussies make an amazing family dog, strong athletes, fine companions, and loyal friends.
Looks
The Mini Australian Shepherd has a medium-length coat. It comes in many color combinations: blue or red merle, red or black tricolor, all with white and/or tan markings. The pigmentation/hair around the ears and eyes should not be white, as the dog may have eyesight or hearing problems. The coat is thick, maybe straight, or slightly wavy. The back of the legs should have feathering, and a mane around the neck should be full with frill. The dog's hindquarters should be the same length as the forequarters, and the top of the skull should be flat and clean cut. Their legs should demonstrate good bones and feet that are oval and compact.
